> How does this compare to other cities?
This is the BS part of the article. The author shouldn't be comparing to other US cities, but to other large cities in the world that don't have a housing crisis. His argument is picking a sick person, and comparing to other sick people for differences, instead of comparing to other healthy people.
Almost all the cities he mentions have housing crisis, but he was either too ignorant or too dishonest to realize that.
Tokyo, no available land, builds an entire new San Francisco every 2.5 years for the past 20 years.
The article is incompetence at best, but most likely, given the "depth" of the analysis, intellectual dishonesty.
- emodendroket 8y agoTokyo is not particularly affordable.
- ucaetano 8y agoOh, it is, far more affordable than most of the US cities. Not only that, but over the past 20 years, the housing prices have increased just slightly above inflation. https://www.ft.com/content/023562e2-54a6-11e6-befd-2fc0c26b3c60 https://www.ft.com/content/023562e2-54a6-11e6-befd-2fc0c26b3... https://www.weetas.com/article/rent-income-ratio-17-major-cities/ https://www.weetas.com/article/rent-income-ratio-17-major-ci...
- quelltext 8y agoIf you compare by price per sqm you are probably right, but places are just generally smaller so you are in the same boat as everyone else. People can typically afford to rent their own apartment.
- emodendroket 8y agoI think it also comes out unfavorably if you compare average income to average rent, but I admit it's been years since I have really looked into it.

- mdorazio 8y agoIn comparison to what? It seemed pretty affordable to me when I was there, and based on some data points as well [1]. [1] https://resources.realestate.co.jp/living/cost-living-single-person-tokyo/ https://resources.realestate.co.jp/living/cost-living-single...
- saosebastiao 8y agoNot to mention that we have two cities on this continent that have excellent cultural, geographic, and economic parallels to San Francisco, as well as Oakland, Seattle, Portland, Boston, Vancouver, and plenty of other coastal North American cities. Chicago and Montreal have both done excellent jobs of growing housing in response to economic growth, and their cities are remarkably affordable in comparison.
- emodendroket 8y ago> Oakland, Seattle, Portland, Boston, Vancouver, and plenty of other coastal North American cities. With the possible exception of Oakland, of which I know little, none of these cities are affordable. Boston and Vancouver, in particular, are among the most expensive cities in North America.
- saosebastiao 8y agoI was saying that Chicago and Montreal could stand as an example for those cities.
- nerfhammer 8y agoHe's simulating how he thinks anti-housing people think. "this post is me exaggerating the NIMBY parts of my brain to a degree I’m not sure I honestly support." Though if the arguments aren't very good it's either because anti-housing arguments fundamentally can't be made any better or that he's not doing a good job doing NIMBYs' views service.
- ucaetano 8y agoNot really: > So here are some YIMBY claims and why I cannot be entirely on board with them.

- dang 8y agoIt breaks the site guidelines to sling accusations of dishonesty and generally attack like this, so please don't. It isn't necessary in order to provide a factual refutation, and weakens the credibility of the rest of your post. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
