Interesting. Around here (Vancouver BC) I would call the casserole the type of food inside the pot. "I'm cooking a casserole tonight." There are a number of types of 'casserole dishes' which are usually more-or-less rectangular dishes with a lid meant for oven use (usually glass or ceramic, sometimes enamel). The Dutch Oven is a round type of a casserole dish.
