Does adblock + custom element filtering not help against such sites? If every additional feature that takes up more computing resources provides a slightly higher chance to retain the average user and thus make more advertising revenue, I don't see why large sites would not riddle their sites with such features. Of course, it's sad that happens; but I think adblock sufficiently solves this. As a side-note, I recently installed DNS66 on my android device and the internet is much faster. Using the mainstream web without adblock seems to be difficult these days.
