Thank you for your contributions to this site, Shawn. The thoughtcrime enforcement is unfortunate. There are plenty who silently agree with you, but are afraid to even so much as upvote for obvious reasons. Thanks again.
- shawn 8y agoI just wanted to say, thank you for this. I was beginning to wonder whether anyone in the world cared. I’ll be running a series of experiments over the coming week to test how ruthlessly a ban curtails someone’s ability to speak. Dan’s hypothesis is that this “probation” isn’t much different from normal HN: users vouch good comments, so why not write good comments? My hypothesis is that orders of magnitude fewer people will read them, so there is no point. I’m also dusting off my old HN clone, Lambda News. Watch for https://news.ycombinator.lol https://news.ycombinator.lol within the next month. The idea is for it to be a real-time clone of HN’s stories. That way people can switch news.ycombinator.com to news.ycombinator.lol and then say whatever they want. LN’s rules are identical to HN’s (and we’ll be enforcing them just as effectively), but intellectual curiosity won’t get you a visit from the Stasi.
