I once worked on a project where we were forced (over the entire engineering team's objections) to use Oracle Spatial (geospatial add-on for Oracle) instead of Postgres+PostGIS :( Not nearly as good. Really, expensive as hell and it doesn't even come close to PostGIS in performance and capability. Ah, government contracting.
