I'd like to point out that Relay also uses this template literal approach to write graphql queries. Then there is styled-components which lets users write css inside js and bind it to components using template literals. It's not a "niche" usage, rather one of the raison d'etre of the feature. Even the MDN docs point this out quite early in the text.
