Apple News and Snapchat Stories appear to be proprietary content viewers that don't directly affect the open Web. (I don't use Apple or Snapchat and probably never will.) AMP is aggressively hijacking the entire Web, and there is no way to avoid it. Google is even trying to hide URLs in Chrome so that users won't know the difference between AMP (a proprietary scheme masquerading as "open source") and real open standards (HTML).
The speed problem is about JavaScript, not HTML. The industry needs to address JavaScript bloat, not create an alternate form of HTML.
