I've heard (although there's not really strong data to support this) that names run on something like a 100-year cycle, i. e. somewhat longer than an average lifespan. You don't want to give your kid an old person name, and you may not want to name them after a still-living relative but it's a good way to honor a dead relative. For example, my daughter's middle name (born 2018) is my grandmother's first name (born 1923).
