- gaius 8y agoTheir bandwidth bills would be a lot cheaper if they weren’t sending megabytes of JS for every kb of actual content
- cirenehc 8y agoYou have no idea what you are talking about. JS doesn't nearly cost as much as images, and most ad-related JS are minified. For many websites ad serving is the only profitable model. You won't make money off subscriptions unless you are one of the big players and don't have to worry about growing your user base.
- gaius 8y agoFor many websites ad serving is the only profitable model. You won't make money off subscriptions unless you are one of the big players I was, until recently, a paying subscriber to the NYT, and there is no difference in the ads and tracking crap they pull. So I call shenanigans on that.
- dang 8y ago> You have no idea what you are talking about. No personal swipes on HN, please. Your comment would be fine without that bit. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- lotu 8y agoBandwidth isn’t the main cost of running a website you also have to pay people to make content. Compared to that bandwidth is free.
