Office politics :)

  this is huge for the typically introvert, nerdy, and socially awkward (and probably sexually frustrated...) computer guy. i lost more than one job because i didn't understand just how underhanded people can be in an office, and how there are webs of power and friendship between people that aren't always obvious, and as they say in Southern California, if you fight one bean you fight the whole burrito (sorry...but that isn't really meant to be racist)... best bet is to not get involved and keep your mouth shut, and avoid office romance, office gossip, office anything. it doesn't even matter how good you are, how smart you are, ...piss off one self-important middle manager who probably can't code something as simple as a++; and you are probably doomed. also, if you are male, be ready for a lot of homosexual advances. another awkward problem that can spin out of control very easily. you know what? i love programming, and i actually don't mind actually doing work....but most jobs are only partially about actually producing anything (this is getting more and more true all the time) and a lot more about kissing the right asses, enduring lots of worthless and unproductive meetings, and such. it blows, man.
