Before the iPhone, if you asked people what they wanted from a phone it was things like "I want more space to store ringtones". Nokia, Blackberry and such seemed to be operating with a focus group approach. People weren't saying "remove the buttons". And I remember a lot of complaining about that when the iPhone first arrived.
