I'm not sure about "removed", but I believe CSS2 specified an algorithm for generating numbers (think automatically numbered headings, paragraphs, etc) that was so poorly specified that only Opera managed to get a coherent, working algorithm out of it. CSS2.1 changes that algorithm to be more sensible, and of course it no longer matches what Opera did.
WebKit came up with a proposal for specifying gradients in CSS, implemented and shipped it. Later, Mozilla came up with a simpler syntax, and the CSS working group adopted Mozilla's proposal.
