Microsoft to ‘warn’ Windows 10 users not to install Chrome or Firefox
- Jonnax 8y agoThis is shocking. So Microsoft is using their smart screen tools to recognise the exes and then warn you.
- romanovcode 8y agoNot sure if you are joking but MS is tracking every .exe you open. Got to your account -> privacy -> download and you see all .exe files you opened.
- Jonnax 8y agoYes. But the idea was that they use it for malware blocking. Not to try and stop you from using another web browser.
- OnlyRepliesToBS 8y agoThe convicted monopolist is doing it again...
- mankash666 8y agoHorrible!! They should just follow Apple and outright ban anything other than a wrapper around their own browser, like Apple does on iOS.
- slededit 8y agoI mean they already say your not secure if you don’t use OneDrive. Nobody complained then - so why not further abuse “security” features.
- rightbyte 8y agoWill this be in the real release? Looks like a anti-trust case for other browser vendors, like MS got fined for including IE with Win 98.
- johnmarcus 8y agoI welcome this addition from Microsoft. I think nothing will push users toward Linux faster than annoying garbage like this.
- badrabbit 8y agoOr to IE...? Non-powerusers can't install linux. If they switch OS it will be to OS X
- majeerin 8y agoCertainly we have some users who work on the Edge team here on HN. I really would like to hear justification for implimenting these kinds of tactics. Aside from the annoyance factor, the much more serious issue is the dishonest implications that Edge is "the safer, faster browser". It seems to be directly suggesting that Edge is safer and faster than Chrome and Firefox, since this comes up when users try to install these browsers. Based on what findings is this claim being made? And how do those responsible for this justify adding this FUD?

- simonblack 8y agoIt's Microsoft. They been doing this sort of thing for at least 25 years. They haven't changed, even if they've fooled some people. It's part of their DNA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AARD_code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AARD_code
