Ask DO vs. AWS, reliablity

I'm debating which provider to use for a new product I'm developing. I anticipate hosting 2000 client sites, doing moderate traffic. Is there any reason I should pick one over the other? I do not need at this time any of the tools AWS provides. I just need bare servers that I will configure myself. Is there any cases of DO completely losing data? Can I rely on them for DNS?
