I gave PyCharm a go just about a year ago. Honestly, i think the UI in just about all of the JetBrains products are super sluggish and laggy and very long start up times, even on the top end Macbook Pros, especially compared to the experience that VS Code manages to provide. And on top of that i feel like there's already more useful extensions in VS Code.
- Rjevski 8y agoI agree with you on the startup time but after that it's honestly not that bad IMO. I'm using it on a tiny 12-inch MacBook with a dual-core processor and it works fine; and doesn't noticeably impact battery life (as opposed to Electron-based apps like VSCode).
- gravypod 8y agoHave you tried low power mode in PyCharm? It makes it a lot faster. I have only had startup sluggishness issues with 250k+ line code bases in JetBrains IDEs. That being said my work laptop is a P51 (i7-7820HQ, 16GB of ram, SSD). I've been working around it by making it a part of my daily routine. Come in, open my laptop, quickly click on every IDE I need for the day, walk away and make coffee. When I come back I can usually start programming.
- Svoka 8y agoStill the worst of all the editors. It will eat up all the RAM for no reasons. Also looks absolutely alien and uses very different shortcuts than all the other macOS apps. IntelliJ is very own world of java crap.
