All I know is that if enough people rely on the same dependency for long enough, the chance of encountering large bugs becomes smaller and smaller. Especially if the dependency has a stable interface. Good software gets better the more it gets used and abused, so I tend to stay away from small dependencies, they're usually not worth the time.
