Yet, Tesla's car sales in the US surpass both Mercedes and BMW in August. And they keep growing fast while BMW/Daimler are plunging.
The thing is, many media reports are completely wrong regarding Tesla's sales/production figures.
Take this one: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-germany-daimler-mercedes/mercedes-unveils-electric-car-in-direct-german-challenge-to-tesla-idUSKCN1LK26G https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-germany-daimler-mer...
>The market for upscale electric cars is Tesla’s to lose, with sales of its entry-level Model 3 sedan expected to reach about 50,000 cars this year and almost double that in 2019.
You know what? Model 3 sales already exceeded 50,000 today. Why Reuters (and all the media who republished the report) expect 50K for the year? There's still a quarter to go, which will easily add 50K!
As for 2019, this won't be a doubling of 50K (that will be achieve by December of this year) but probably more than 300,000 Model 3s.
Given the estimated profitability (cf. https://electrek.co/2018/07/16/tesla-model-3-teardown-profitability/ https://electrek.co/2018/07/16/tesla-model-3-teardown-profit...), that should be a shock to all those who trust Reuters and co.
If you call Tesla a pyramid scheme, how would you describe BMW and Mercedes car business in the US?
FYI, excluding vans, Tesla outsold Mercedes US sales by ~3K vehicles in August: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180904005710/en/Mercedes-Benz-USA-Reports-August-Sales-20339-Units https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180904005710/en/Mer.... - chmaynard 8y agoTesla was a successful boutique car company for a number of years. I admired their products and mission, so I made a small investment in Tesla common stock. I made a significant profit when I sold it last year. I was also among the first to pre-order the Model 3. The point of the article is that Musk has bet the company on the Model 3 project and has deceived investors to raise capital. I'm appalled at his behavior, both as CEO and as a person. I decided to use the term "pyramid scheme" to characterize what Tesla has become, and I agree that it is a strong claim. Just my armchair opinion.
