From the over zealous war on drugs to fund the politically powerful police and sheriff unions I'm not disagreeing with your premise completely, but conflating policies that are genuinely meant to help the working poor and policies that are specifically meant to harm people (the war on drugs being an excellent example) is dishonest and unhelpful.
