IBM had a monopoly problem. Allegedly they had a group of lawyers to check every new product and business to avoid being broken up like Standard Oil. If they wouldn't have worried about that for sure they wouldn't have used a supplier to write the operating system. The established auto industry isn't similarly restricted.
