It isn't just about having a compilation process or something, but it's about the fact that a good type system (even like that of TypeScript) is like getting the compiler to do a lot of error checking for you without having to write the unit tests for it. But if the project itself is so small that you don't care about writing unit tests, then sure fine use vanilla JS.
