You might be surprised but I remember an article comparing various computers and input methods and it turns out that USB vs hardware interrupt(PS/2) is significantly more latency. Software plays a role but even e.g. vim vs an old-school computer actually has a noticeable difference. I haven't experienced this myself but I do know writers that use computers from the 80s for this exact reason( George R. R. Martin being one example). I have also heard from other people that have tried this that the QoL improvement is pretty big.
- TeMPOraL 8y agoI think we need to take it one step at a time. First, let's kill the modern web, then continue to get rid of other layers of bloat on modern computers, and when all the low-hanging fruits have been plucked, we can do something about hardware protocol latency...
- HeadsUpHigh 8y agoAgreed. But how do you kill the modern web? And how do you go about killing all the bloat underneath? Do you expect microsoft to fix windows? Or redhat to abandon systemd? Or wayland? Or the countless other bloated pieces of the puzzle? Honestly at this point unless we go back and remake everything from the start the interests are probably too big to be dealt with.
- pjc50 8y agoYou can never go back, just as you can never step in the same river twice; the only way this can happen is if by doing so it enables something radically different that wasn't previously possible. Just as Windows was never really "defeated" by Linux or MacOS, but is gradually being rendered less relevant by smartphones.
- HeadsUpHigh 8y agoWhich I guess again boils down to what I've always been saying: we need to find a way to make hardware manufacturing cheaper. You control the hardware, you control everything. We need more people controlling hardware in order to get a more healthy market.
- TeMPOraL 8y agoThe example 'pjc50 gave isn't one of just different hardware, it's one of a different class of hardware. I don't think letting people make hardware cheaper is going to help much now (you can make hardware prototypes cheap enough these days). Not to mention, bloat finds a way. See e.g. smartwatches. There was Pebble that managed to create a good, bloat-free piece of equipment. But the market was soon flooded by watches running... Android. Even navigations, biking computers and other sports devices run Android now.
- HeadsUpHigh 8y agoBy hardware I mean the actual silicon itself. OpenGL is so complex and patent-encumbered that I highly doubt anyone can make a new implementation at this point.
- gaius 8y agoBut how do you kill the modern web? There’s no actual need for a page to be 10Mb to deliver 5k of text and a 50k JPEG. Esp not on mobile.
- TeMPOraL 8y agoYeah, but the GP's question - the one that's really hard - is how, not why.
- HeadsUpHigh 8y agoI am painfully aware. But that doesn't prevent webpages from actually doing so. I have no idea what the motivations are as I'm not a web developer.
- glandium 8y agoI think this is the article you're talking about: https://danluu.com/input-lag/ https://danluu.com/input-lag/
- HeadsUpHigh 8y agoYup that's it. Bookmarked, thanks.
