The developer of the version of 2048 everyone has heard of (Gabriele Cirulli) had apparently never heard of or seen Threes, but the games he was copying/inspired were in turn inspired by/copied from Threes, if you dig back far enough. Note that Threes has different, more complex rules. Some prefer it, but apparently, more people don't. :)
