I believe that the problem is that facebook is more than that, you have:
* User timelines -> Blog (with photo and video support)
* User groups -> Forum
* Messenger -> Chat
* Events -> Calendar
Using federation, this will probably be solved not by a "faccebook alternative", but multiple alternatives to each small service.
