Try putting 200,000 tons of coal into barrels, transport it, and then unbarrel it at the other end. The extra cost and time would be massive.

  What about just compartmentalizing the ship's cargo space?

    I imagine they don't do that so they can carry more than just these bulk loads. Carrying bauxite in one direction and scrap iron the other, for example.

    They are also compartmentalised. Bulkers tend to have four or five large tanks to hold stuff in.
