Apple: Back to the Mac Media Event 20-Oct
- barredo 16y agoWill it be OS10.7 or OS11? Just guessing, being the lion the "biggest" cat...
- bbatsell 16y agoApple's running clear out of cats, so I sincerely doubt that they would start off OS XI with a cat. I've seen constellations suggested as the code names for the next series of OSes, which wouldn't be out of the blue considering OS X's recent use of starfields and such for marketing material and desktops.
- highpass 16y agoIt has been known for quite some time now that the upcoming iterations of Apple's operating system will be using HP Sauce's 57 varieties as a naming scheme, allowing for an unprecedented amount of revisions before trying to think of something else.
- hernan7 16y agoNice try, but it's Heinz not HP. (Actually, Heinz acquired HP in 2005.)

- cmer 16y agoAt this point I can't see Apple keep using the OSn (ie: OS11) convention because "OS X" has become such a powerful brand in itself. I doubt they'll want to give that up. My guess is that they'll stick with 10.x for some time and might eventually name their next major OS something like Mac OS X 11, even though it sounds silly. Or what about xOS (vs iOS)? Has a nice ring to it :) I'm sure there has been countless meetings at Apple regarding this. I wish I was inside Steve's head...
- sjs 16y agoIndeed. Most people don't realize it's "OS Ten". Kind of like X11, OS X is probably the last "major" version of MacOS as we know it. By the time they move away from 10.x they'll probably be ready for a new name. I don't quite see how it'll work but lots of people think iOS and OS X will merge.
- Manfred 16y agoOr maybe even dOS, that would put a smile on people's faces (;
- CrLf 16y agoMost people I know call it OS "EX". In fact, I'm one of those people, even though I know perfectly well it's OS "Ten". OS 10 doesn't ring well with me, perhaps because I never really used any of the Mac OS versions that preceeded it and feel that OS X is not from the same family (being mostly NeXT with a reworked UI).

- siglesias 16y agoThey've still got room for a couple of tactical Snow Leopard-like $29 upgrades after 10.7, so why not bobcat and ocelot?
- bkyle 16y agoMac OS X 10.8 Domestic Short Hair. Not much of a ring to it :)
- philwelch 16y agoCat names Apple has used/will use: Cheetah (10.0) Puma (10.1) Jaguar (10.2) Panther (10.3) Tiger (10.4) Leopard (10.5) Snow Leopard (10.6) Lion (10.7) Cat names left unused: Cougar, Ocelot, Bobcat, Lynx, Serval Apple still has quite a few years to go before running out of cats. Lynx and Cougar are both already trademarked by Apple. http://www.macrumors.com/2003/07/24/apple-trademarks-lynx-cougar-leopard-tiger-and-more/ http://www.macrumors.com/2003/07/24/apple-trademarks-lynx-co... Semantically, Cougar might be problematic (Cougar and Puma are the same animal) but it doesn't really matter--for instance, there's no actual cat species called "panther", it's just a generic name for big cats, and the black panther is just a subspecies of jaguar. (However, interestingly enough, snow leopards are a completely different species than leopards.) There's other synonyms for "Cougar" you can put in there ("Mountain Lion") to extend the queue. In fact, Mountain Lion might be a minor upgrade on Lion just as Snow Leopard was a minor upgrade on Leopard. EDIT: Fixed taxonomical error. EDIT: Turns out "black panthers" can be melanistic jaguars OR leopards.
- raganwald 16y agoBlack Panther has some serious semantic baggage to overcome, I can't ever see it is a product name.
- bkyle 16y agoSimilarly with Cougar.
- sudont 16y ago"Pad" was met with extreme derision by female tech journalists, their "me too" male counterparts and anyone on Jezebel. I'm sure Apple's brand is strong enough to overcome the current connotations.
- philwelch 16y agoSo go with Lion, Mountain Lion, Lynx, Serval. Then it'll be 5-6 years from now and either the slang usage of "cougar" will fall out of use or at least the novelty will be gone and people will interpret it as an allusion to the cat itself.
- pmjordan 16y agoVarious iOS SDK header files contain references to MAC_OS_X_VERSION_10_7 so I strongly suspect it's the former.
- callahad 16y agoI'm hoping OS XI is codenamed Def Leppard. "This one goes to 11!"
- cubicle67 16y agoIt'll introduce changes people don't like, but have the tag line "love bites" The goes to 11 quote is Spinal Tap, btw
