I was actually quite paranoid in those days that Microsoft was trying to take over computing in its entirety. We were looking at a future where every computer would run Windows and only be able to connect to a network owned by Microsoft. All the protocols and document formats would be proprietary. But was it really paranoia if it's actually what Microsoft was trying to achieve? I was quite surprised when they were defeated by the Internet, and they had to scramble to buy a web browser. That lead to the "Best viewed with Internet Explorer" days, but that's another story.
