I would hire these kids almost sight unseen

- thecatspaw 8y agohow does not using social media make people valuable as an employee?
- m1573rp34130dy 8y agoit displays a mindset that is outside of average, and demonstrates awareness rather than intellectual vulnerability... I would add i look for skills but i also look for potentials that may be developed, partnership in development is important and superior to using a biological robot that needs constant maintenence...
- grenoire 8y agoErhm... Intellectual vulnerability is really pushing it, and it's a bit degrading. Not everybody currently using social media is blindly addicted to it.
- m1573rp34130dy 8y agothats why these kids are leaving it, they are not blindly addicted to it... i think blindly addicted is a somewhat degrading euphemism as well the manipulation that occurs so someone can make ad revenue is one thing, the attack on the wetware is another look at present POTUS
- grenoire 8y agoYou are ignoring that for many others it's a platform that they rely on for communications. Quitting Facebook was easy in my circle, but I still have people who message me through Instagram. Network effect is often not negligible.
- TheForumTroll 8y agoThey message you on Instagram because they can..
- grenoire 8y agoI don't disagree with that but you gotta' realise that some people only use Instagram and Facebook for their communications, so I can't get them to WhatsApp, SMS, or email me.
- 4rgento 8y agoAs stated elsewhere in this thread, social media is about collecting your data. This includes what you like, what you hate, what makes you happy, who you love, who you look up to, etc... Now, this can be used to set your(not you but the social media user, no need to be an addict) mood and thus your emotions. This is what advertisers use to target ads or design them. Your "intellect", in the short therm, is heavily dependent on your mood and your emotions. By "intellect", I'm referring to how you interact to the environment. (E.g. a sad person would interact with other people differently than a person that just made a million dollars). So, if social media has such a handle on your emotions they have a handle on your intellect (its manifestations, which is the only thing other people can perceive ). I would say "that intellect" is vulnerable. Because it is not serving your best interests. Because it's been manipulated to make you want to buy a new car, for example. PS: I know this is controversial opinion and a lot of people will hate it. But I do believe this is the case given my current understanding of machine learning capabilities and human cognition.
- m1573rp34130dy 8y agovery interesting analysis
- ddebernardy 8y agoNot the OP, but all things being equal, the lack of incessant notifications makes a huge difference to one's ability to stay focused and thus to one's productivity.
- m1573rp34130dy 8y agothank you...
- thecatspaw 8y agoAgreed, its the notifications which are the productivity killer. Not the social media platforms. With all of them you can disable notifications. Funnily enough my biggest productivity killer at work is slack.
- ddebernardy 8y agoOh yeah, Slack (or equivalent) is a monster too. But it's unfortunately there to stay, at least for remote teams. A good way to ignore it, btw, is to disable notifications (including the one on the icon) and to spend most of the day in Do Not Disturb mode. It ensures you only read it on your schedule while leaving some leeway for when something urgent comes up. Another big productivity killer IMO is email. But that one's easier to manage if you stick to doing it once or twice per day only and have rules that get corporate email noise out of your way.
- m1573rp34130dy 8y ago...the demand for a response is wired in to most undamaged wetware... ...willing compliance is a phenomenal leverage point... being social creatures the whole tribe is in chaos if we dont comply or come to consensus of group action, thus blind faith in authorities of all types exist as a conditioned response

- TangoTrotFox 8y agoGo back to a decade ago (with today's knowledge of how social media would transform and grow, to make things fair), and imagine you were able to program yourself. Over the next decade how many hours would you allocate to 'waste time on social media'? How many hours did you actually spend doing that? I think there's hardly a person that's satisfied with the amount of time they spend on these outlets, yet actually stopping can be very difficult. It requires immense self discipline, an ability to realize where and how time can be more effectively spent, as well as a big picture view to even realize there's an issue to begin with.
- thecatspaw 8y agoWith today's knowledge, I wouldnt create any facebook and reddit accounts (only social media where I feel like I wasted a lot of time on). Now I dont have any accounts there anymore. It wasnt hard to quit. All it took was a serious "oh fuck this shit" moment, just like I quit smoking. But am I a better employee because of that? I dont think so. Not having social media doesnt solve any motivation/discipline/attention span problems
- m1573rp34130dy 8y ago...But you escaped the skinner box ! kudos... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning_chamber https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning_chamber
- toomanybeersies 8y agoGo to a cafe and see how many employees are staring at their phone. When I used to work in hospo it seemed like the front of house staff spent more time on their phones than doing actual work. I don't know what it used to be like, I assume that disinterested employees found other ways to sham off work, but social media and smartphones are a real productivity killer.
- m1573rp34130dy 8y agoi believe the two [smartphone+socialmedia] are a bitter pill... i actually destroyed the first smartphone i bought, reason being everytime i attempted to do something constructive the device had other plans, notifications, upgrades in the middle of a task, FB wants your attention or some piece of info, web queries or http lookups funneling through google, but not bcz i have no G+ account... [speedball pitch/smashingglass] and then i swore off smartphones
- thecatspaw 8y agoSure, but that is not a problem of social media, its a problem of bored workers looking to cure their boredom. If they arent on their phone they would be reading something or staring holes into the air. I dont have any of the traditional social medias, yet I still slack of frequently, get distracted all the time. Imho there is very little to no connection between social media usage and productivity.
- m1573rp34130dy 8y agothe usage of social media isnt a productivity issue its the skinner boxing that is deployed by almost all outlets, the many onion skin layers that slowly morphed what was a very effective tool for communication into a brain training device similar to television... HN is one of the few that are still a blogalike format... there is a wonderfull limitation to a single media format such as flat_ascii vs multimedia...
- thecatspaw 8y agobut even HN is a skinner box. It rewards you with points for writing comments that people like. Its exactly the same as reddit in that regard. Yes, social media is used to shape people's thoughts and opinions, same as advertisements, television, newspapers, books, people you're talking to. So I can only repeat my question, what makes me better than someone else who has facebook and reddit? I am not invincible to operant conditioning, advertisements and people pushing their own agenda on me either
- draw_down 8y agoYuck
