To summarize what happened - Uber's autopilot makes decisions about when emergency braking is necessary. But the software was braking so often on public roads that overall it's driving was erratic.
So Uber knowingly disabled emergency braking in all cases.
This essentially turned the car into a missile on our public roads.
at the time of the accident, the autopilot detected the pedestrian. Calculated an imminent collision, and initiated emergency braking. Instead of actually breaking, the message to break simply went to the logs.
Combine that with a safety driver that was looking down at the console and not up at the road - and the fatality was the result.

It is completely beyond me why there isn't a battery of government saftey tests that vehicles with autopilot must pass before they get approved for use on our public roads.
How many times have you seen footage of a crash test dummy safely landing in an air bag? I want to see footage of crash test dummies getting pushed out in front of autopilot cars - and hopefully, never getting run down.

Because the inefficiencies of government are catching up with them as they'd rather right each other (different parties) rather than be productive and move the country forward.

- andygates 8y agoTechnology always outpaces legislation. It's been that way since the telegraph and earlier. Legislators can't rule for stuff that isn't there, and tech changes spec all the time. Once there actually are fully-autonomous vehicles on public roads, the rules will come together. For now it's humans, just like every other vehicle.
- camelCaseOfBeer 8y agoI'd nod to this incident you mention being the one boon to corporate accountability, if Uber has anything half-decent to talk about. Here we are in full-knowing of the decisions that led to the death of a pedestrian, discussing potential solutions and future mitigation. Meanwhile someone probably got fired, the engineers working on the system are reeling, all as the company tries to address the issue. In other news, the same exact thing happened on 10 other occasions that day but nobody heard about it because what was going through the black boxes of the idiotpilot cars is a complete and utter mystery. Nah, my man, the ails of Uber OP is talking about is the slow-moving train wreck that is the egregious mismanagement of the corporation. Any turd that could rain on a tech company's parade has landed with a thick, "splurt" right on the floor of the executive suite of Uber's corporate headquarters. Gender discrimination lawsuits, revolving-door executives, mistrustful shareholders, widespread toxic corporate culture, general hatred toward the company from every sector of its employees, it's such a disgusting mess of egos even Trump couldn't resist dipping his chode in there. What you're talking about is what makes the self-driving car great, not what makes Uber a terrible bedfellow. Nah, when it comes to lying with a corporation like Uber, just call that bed a crypt. And go figure, auto manufacturing corporations are so large and have so much operational complexity that they're perpetually 5-10 years behind the ball. I'd put my money on this deal being no exception, it had probably been in the works years before Uber began circling the drain.
