You can actually change that up all in the settings (even on a per deck basis). It takes a bit of tinkering because it's not clear from the beginning what each setting does. Typically if I get something wrong I reset it to 20% of its previous time (so if it was a month since I saw it last I'd see it in around 6 days). I'd trust the system though. Typically once you get to the point where you won't see it for more than a year you're highly unlikely to forget the content anyway. Although it depends on what you're trying to learn. The default settings are optimised for learning Japanese.
