Ask HN: How to do AI research if you aren’t in school?

I just received my master’s in CS and another one in Neuroscience. I’d like to do A PhD, but I have no research experience and was wondering if you have any advice on how to get some before applications? I’m working on my own project as it is, and might get funded through Startup school and the Pioneer leaderboard, but that is a long shot.
