The book he wants has been written. It's called The mythical man-month, by Fred Brooks. It does a post-mortem about what went wrong (an what went well) on the development of an IBM OS. I think it contains today mostly stuff everybody knows, so it had a lot of impact on our profession. Not on the coding part, but very deeply on the management part.
