Huck Finn is tough. It's not really appropriate as-is for the modern day child. So either you water it down to sell it as a kid's/young adult movie (what most versions have done), or you try to sell adults on watching a movie whose protagonist is a youth. Add to that the complexity of dealing with difficult racial topics, American history, and finding a young actor who can pull off the role and it's pretty clear why we don't yet have and probably never will have a good movie version of the book.
Maybe someone will make the movie from Jim's perspective and that would be an easier sell?
