Maybe the oldest and most advanced civilizations decided to go tribal. Maybe they are so advanced that they can hide their trail so belligerent civilizations like ours do not encounter them. I don't think the easiest explanation is to assume that there is any sort of naturally occurring event in the universe that is one of a kind, save maybe for the big bang.
