People stopped harvesting redwoods because iirc not only are they protected but they're not a good source of lumber because when you fell redwoods, they shatter unless if you're careful.
- ac29 8y agoA non-trivial amount of redwood is still cut down, including in the Bay Area. This mill near Santa Cruz processes ~20 million board feet a year: https://bigcreeklumber.com/ https://bigcreeklumber.com/
- dbcurtis 8y agoSequoia Sempervirons, the coastal redwood, is good wood and naturally weather resistant. It is still logged. Sequoia Gigantis, on the western slope of the mid Sierra, is brittle and not very practical to log. (please pardon my Latin spelling. English spelling gives me a rough time....)
