I maintain a tremendously popular Open Source project with 8.5K+ stars, and it is extraordinarily hard. (Hint: Imagine Firebase + IPFS had a lovechild, that is what it is. But this is the moral, harsh, but important: Financial hardship sucks but does not define the values of Open Source.
