Ask HN: What will be your career advice for a soon-to-be data scientist?

Some context: After working for about 4 years as a Software Engineer (mostly backend and platform), I have decided to pursue a masters in Data Science and will be switching my career to this field. My intention and interest is to work in a role where application of data science can directly affect the business and I am particularly inclined to work for a FinTech, an investment bank or a Hedge Fund. Any advice in this regard would be really appreciated.
