Sad thing is - if this is going on at Cisco imagine what goes on in the farm fields, the restaurants, the hotels, and the rest of the lowest paying jobs in this country. If it takes YEARS to build a case against giant company how many little guys are getting away with it on a daily basis?
- fjsolwmv 8y agoIn the farms, even basic laws banning hiring illegal immigrants get immediately blocked by a coalition of pro-immigration activists and big companies in the industry.
- Aloha 8y agoWithout illegal immigrants crops would literally rot in the fields. I don't like illegal immigration, I'd rather there be a easy legal program to allow temporary workers, but there isn't, and I like eating.
- rhexs 8y agoJust to be clear, you believe you would starve if immigration policy was changed in such a way that farmers received less subsidies and had to pay a fair wage to get work done?
- Aloha 8y agoNo actually. I believe that just deporting the illegal immigrants without fixing the other broken parts of the system that we would have massive crop losses - significant amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables would disappear from shelves.
- kevin_thibedeau 8y agoThere is a legal guest worker program for unskilled agricultural labor: H-2A. It's not as cheap as hiring itinerant work crews with no visa, though.
- Aloha 8y agoEverything I have read implies that there is a significant paperwork burden with this visa, and the number of people you can get via the program are very limited.
- bkor 8y agoThe Netherlands exports a huge amount of food and loads of the work is fully automated. For the work which isn't there's still a lot of seasonal work. For that they do employ people, often from lower paid countries such as e.g. Poland. Poland isn't far away from The Netherlands. From what I saw in a documentary the Dutch farmers heavily optimize pretty much everything they can, not only through automation.
- Aloha 8y agoIts very hard to automate the picking of fruit and certain vegetables. That's why its not done - for some of them, its currently impossible, and have an acceptable yield rate.
- conanbatt 8y agoOh god, how many burritos have you ate that were made by an ILLEGAL!
- candiodari 8y ago... who was underpaid, to a level where properly living is out of the question. Who was abused and threatened into unpaid overtime. Just saying there's other considerations too. I get that these practices mean that it's likely a better burrito, but it's wrong.
- conanbatt 8y agoYou are not doing that person any favor by banning them from the US.
- candiodari 8y agoThat's how it works, isn't it ? They improve the fate of a single person, to a totally unsatisfactorily low level, and thereby drag down everyone. So yes you're not helping that individual. In fact you're damaging that individual potentially a lot. But you're helping far more people a little bit.
- conanbatt 8y agoWhat a great humanitarian endeavor, to punish the weakest and most vulnerable for the benefit of the whole.
- candiodari 8y agoThe same can be said about the opposite: allow immigrants to take up the lowest jobs thinking it'll provide a decent life. That is a lie, and steals that opportunity of a decent life from others too.
