Nobody likes being told what’s best for you, and that’s basically what a functional bureaucracy does. But it gets worse, because you mainly come into contact with it when you’re a client and since the state takes accountability rather serious when it comes to welfare, it requires things of you, so you feel like it’s a struggle. Probably an uphill struggle since you’re at your lowest and bureaucrats are typically at a higher social level than you.
Populism and reactivism is the opposite, it offers very few realistic solutions, but it does sell you ideas. More than that though, it idolizes your struggle.
So you get fooled, like people have been throughout the ages, and it’ll be interesting if we ever come up with a solution that also allows for peace and individual freedom for more than 80 years.
Maybe we will. In Germany the Green Party has just finished its summer tour through hardcore AfD country, and they’ve converted a lot of down throdden citizens, simply by talking to them.
