Ask HN: What's the upgrade situation with smart speakers?

My speakers are failing, so I need to buy new ones. I'm considering smart speakers, but want to know what the upgrade situation is. Who sends upgrades — Google and Amazon, or OEMs? In the latter case, it might be like Android, which means we can't count on upgrades, security holes and bugs remain unfixed, etc.
