X11 has always supported both networked client/server and everything happening on the local machine, using tcp/ip for the former, and either shared memory or local sockets for the latter, depending on implementation.

I haven't seen numbers myself, but you can't simply assume that. Programmer-millenia of work has gone into making the various implementations of X11 efficient.
