I am slightly confused by the selection of those sentences, the bullshit sentences barely make grammatical sense, while the profound sentences are honestly pretty banal and sound like things you'd find written on tote-bags sold in etsy stores.
I found the study pretty interesting especially table 2 is extremely informative!
- JulianMorrison 8y agoThe bullshit sentences look like they were put together by a Markov chain.
- magicalhippo 8y agoYet they sound a lot like what's written on countless mugs, pillows and plaques sold these days.
- Moodles 8y agoWe can even generate bullshit CS papers (and get them accepted into some unscrupulous journals) now! https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/archive/scigen/ https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/archive/scigen/
- JulianMorrison 8y agoThis should be automated like a chaos monkey for journals.
- mkohlmyr 8y agoAs someone who grew up and studied in Sweden I'd be surprised if a random selection of the population were able to parse those sentences well enough to make a qualified judgement to begin with. And then there's the question of how 'profound' the second set is to begin with..
- awild 8y agoThey are translated from Swedish for this paper.
- Lewton 8y agoThis seems to just be a proxy that ends up measuring whether IQ is correlated to being prosocial
- dri_ft 8y agoBingo.
- pdpi 8y agoExcept the paper specifically states that the effect remains after controlling for cognitive ability.
- Lewton 8y agoThanks for pointing that out Relevant part of the paper > Numeracy and cognitive reflection (Section 4). Participants responded to three numeracy questions taken from Schwartz et al. [30] and from the Berlin numeracy test ([31]), and immediately thereafter to the three questions that make up the original CRT [12]. On both these variables, participants obtained a score between 0 and 3 representing the number of correct responses.
- DanBC 8y agoYou could probably put the bullshit sentences on etsy trinkets and sell them, maybe as sucessfully as the others.
- shoo 8y agoI classified them into "falsifiable" and "not even wrong".
- muzani 8y agoI think it's supposed to be fairly easy so that the tested groups don't attach meaning to bullshit sentences, accidentally making them profound. I would argue that bullshit-i sensitive types are also the ones who fall for Nigerian prince emails, and the paper is there to test that.
