I really don't understand this concern.
My emacs gets restarted when my laptop reboots. Which happens on a timescale of months. I honestly don't care if it takes minutes to start, so long as it's super responsive once it's running.
I feel like maybe something's been missed if you're starting emacs all the time. But then, I feel the same way about Linux, and clearly many many people disagree with me.
So the comment in that thread about AOT compilation was extra interesting for me :-)
- dan-robertson 8y agoIt’s worth noting that Emacs’ built in lisp libraries are sort-of aot compiled: Emacs loads all the Lisp into memory, evaluating some initialisation stuff, then it does a gc, then it does a very scary “unexec” operation which has been in the source for around 30 years with most people so scared of the function that they only poke at it enough to make it just-about work. The function takes the current contents of memory and produces an ELF from it which will start up with the lisp libraries already loaded into memory.
- avar 8y agoThere's a WIP portable dumper that hasn't been merged yet which'll replace that. This LWN article has a good summary of it: https://lwn.net/Articles/707615/ https://lwn.net/Articles/707615/
