Ask HN: What is your criteria for choosing a company / job?
- MrEfficiency 8y agoPay/benefits converted to USD and hours/week including commute time. This then can be converted to a $/hr, and usually makes my decision. Work is work, and I've never hated any job from retail to engineering.
- scarface74 8y agoTechnology, Environment, Money Technology - I won’t either accept a job or stay at a job where the technology stack is not marketable. Environment - Commute time, company size, level of autonomy. Money - I work for one reason, to get paid. I don’t really care about healthcare benefits. I get those through my wife. If there is no 401K match or the 401K match has more than a 3 year vesting, I want a hire salary.
- smt88 8y agoWhat if the stack is a niche, like Haskell or Rust? Haskell devs claim to have plenty of work because there are few of them, and Rust might be very marketable in a few years. Would you work on either of those?
- scarface74 8y agoNope. I look on the job boards and trusted recruiters emails to see where there is a balance between the number of openings and the pay. I don’t see any openings for Rust or Haskell locally. Ughhh did I just say “hire salary” instead of “higher salary”.
- smt88 8y agoOther people covered my big ones (environment/lifestyle, compensation), but I'll add that I don't work on products I consider unethical, like ad-tech.
