Recruiter, with evidence that better problem solvers on the spot are more competent: Nope.
- cheez 8y agoMy hypothesis is that on-the-spot problem solvers are likely good at playing office politics, which can lead to the appearance of being more competent. I have never seen a quick thinker be bad at office politics.
- solveit 8y agoClearly you've never been to grad school in pure maths.
- cheez 8y agoGrad schools aren't an analogous environment.
- marssaxman 8y agoHi? I never even try to play office politics, and have lost at least one job as a result, but I routinely do well with with this sort of puzzle. I don't see a connection.
- cheez 8y agoI guess the "never" is too absolutist. It is possible that there is a correlation, though it could never be 100%
- marssaxman 8y agoI suppose it is also possible that I would be good at office politics if I wanted to be; it's not that I've tried and failed, but that I regard it as unworthy of attention. Perhaps my anecdote is therefore not even a counterexample.
