Coffeelake isn't particularly power hungry, nor does it run particularly hot, nor does it have issues with thermal throttling.
- bhouston 8y agoMy Dell XPS 9670 with uses a Coffee Lake Intel Core i7 8570H throttles down by >50% after one minutes if I try to use all 12HT cores.
- mbell 8y ago>50% of what? The base clock of that CPU is only 2.2ghz, it'll use ~45W at 2.2ghz which is what it's rated at. If the cooling in your laptop can't support that, it's a problem with the laptop, not the processor. Also these are desktop processors, the 8700k doesn't have any notable power / thermal issues. The only way I can get the one in my desktop up to it's rated TDP is overclocking it a bit and hitting it with prime95 AVX.
- chrisper 8y agoI have the 8700k and you can barley overclock it without it running too hot.
- dogma1138 8y agoLuck of the draw mine does 5.3ghz easily on an AIO and doesn’t go above 80c even with Prime/Intel stress test. Also make sure you are not using offset voltages instead of fully manual ones, the OC/Boost voltages motherboards set are way too high.
- ianai 8y agoWhat’s the AIO make/model?
- dogma1138 8y agoH110 don’t remember if I or not it’s a pretty old one I had for nearly 5(?) years I’ve replaced the liquid in it with distilled water a few times already. My vcore is set to 1.34 but the LLC pushes it to abit more than 1.35 under a burn test, AVX offset is -2 (it seems to be stable at 0 but temps reach to 90>), IMC is at 3666mhz.
- chrisper 8y agoSo are you saying that the "overclock profile" on my Mobo is not the one I should use?
- mbell 8y agoMine has very little overclocking room actually, but it's not thermally limited, I doubt yours is either. How are you determining that your part is thermally limited and not silicon limited?
- dogma1138 8y agoThey are not separate if your silicon can not do high frequencies on a fairly low voltage say below 1.35v you’ll be thermally throttled unless you delied and use a custom loop, as 1.4v+ would cause the chip to run way too hot. I haven’t seen any 8700K that would not reach 5.0ghz heck I haven’t seen one that wouldn’t reach 5.2 the question is at what voltage and if it’s sustainable under load.
