Sucks. I don't think in game ads can be as terrible as they have been (speaking as a gamer) and in moderation would be a good income source for games, provided they were also sold cheaper.
Games like TF2 are cheap but also have (fake) posters etc in the game... naturally it wouldn't go over well with an existing game but I think if you stylized the ads to fit in with the theme, and didn't make them too overt, it would be accepted a bit easier.
Obviously a crystal-clear ad for KFC in Call of Duty wouldn't work too well.
- wwortiz 16y agoValve did do this with cs 1.6, I don't know if it is still up or not, but they started off advertising the orange box and other things steam related (I believe they added the advertising spots to the maps after the fact however).
- thwarted 16y agoquakelive has modified the stock maps to add billboards (that don't effect the flow of the map), They are mostly empty and just show a generic quakelive logo, currently. Once they get some advertisers, I don't think it would be that intrusive, but they do definitely look like billboards, and may look out of place once actual ads, with colors that don't match the theme of the map, are shown on them.
- CrazedGeek 16y agoI think Massive did the in-game ads for Burnout Paradise (the 360 version, at least)- they were fairly tastefully done. Not sure if it worked out for anyone involved, though.
