One of the major problems is seeing what you are typing. With desktop zooming/hardware accelerated UI, it's not so bad. I have a 27" iMac and wireless keyboard and mouse that I use from a sofa 6 feet away. The major drawback with this set-up is the lack of mouse-only zooming (have to hold down cmd).
