What's the advantage over just using ublock everywhere? Why go to all this effort and include another point of failure in your network when you can just install an extension?
- vitaflo 8y agoThe advantage is for anything you can't install ublock on. It's program agnostic.
- class4behavior 8y agoPihole manages your hosts file which redirects domain names to a configured IP-address; a local one when the goal is blocking. It is a bit overhyped but useful when you understand what it's for. It uses the same lists as uBlock, but only the rules which filter the entire domains. Meaning, uBlock covers a lot more ground and preserves the operability of most websites. As such, just for browser activity it is a redundant measure. The difference is, for everything else it affects all your traffic; that is, Android or Windows apps, telemetry, bad content in HTML emails, etc. If you install it on a router, you can cover all your devices. That can immediately or later cause issues with websites and apps inhibiting usage when ads or trackers are blocked. So you need to be available for whitelisting.
