If the average voter buys into the government narrative of out-of-control private enterprise and the requirement of all these regulations, that's the government influencing the people. The government in itself is a special interest group. When the media (such as in this piece) perpetuates that same narrative, are they defending their special interest? Seems more like ignorance to me.
