Belphemur said it best: before LE SSL/TLS was relatively 'obscure', sure many sites had it, but it was an optional extra that cost a yearly fee. Now, any old joe bloggs can setup a webserver (or use tools like cPanel which have LE integrated) and get the nice shiny green padlock with 'secure' in their browser.
And, if you run your own server, their client even generates the configs for most major web servers on most major OS', so you don't even need to lift a finger. Type 1 command and boom, you're secure.
Doesn't get easier than that.
